The Federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires written disclosure of information about hazardous chemicals in the workplace. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) communicates that information. Among other things, it covers proper use, handling and storage, as well as safety procedures. It is used primarily by employees, but also emergency first-responders such as fire fighters, hazardous material crews and medical personnel.
An MSDS is not intended for consumers. Consumer information about hazardous household materials can be found at the Household Products Database of the National Institute of Health.
