In July, 2011, Founders David and Ann Knight moved from key management positions to consulting support roles to pursue other opportunities. David Knight will continue to serve on Teragren's Board of Directors.
In 1994, the Knights pioneered the bamboo flooring market in the U.S. while simultaneously demonstrating an unwavering commitment to building a company that is environmentally, socially and economically responsible. Subsequently, Teragren has played a significant role in reducing dependence on dwindling timber resources.
Under the Knights' leadership, revenues grew at a rate of 40 percent annually for many years and Teragren garnered widespread industry recognition, including placement on Inc. Magazine's list of "The Green 50" companies setting the standard for environmentally friendly businesses.
The company has also achieved significant industry recognition, having been named to both the Inc. 5000 Index of Fastest Growing Private Companies and the Puget Sound Business Journal's list of 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies for several consecutive years. In addition, David was a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in both 2008 and 2009.
As a result, Teragren is now a global leader in the manufacturing of high quality bamboo flooring, panels and worktops.
Teragren has played a critical role in the increasing demand for bamboo products since the company was founded in 1994. The company was built on a solid business model focusing on quality, consistency, stateside inventory availability and service—and dedication to environmentally and socially responsible practices.
A driving factor behind the success of Teragren was the determination to prove that a rapidly growing business can instill socially and environmentally responsible practices throughout its business and still turn an enviable profit.
Teragren follows the principles of The Natural Step, a program that focuses on applying basic concepts of sustainability. A core component of Teragren's mission is to measure, mitigate and ultimately neutralize the company's environmental footprint and to be carbon negative. Currently, Teragren's Washington State headquarters is carbon neutral. Teragren products also contribute up to four LEED® credits within the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design® Green Building Rating System™.
Teragren has also demonstrated its commitment to pioneering environmental standards within the bamboo industry by becoming the world's first company to offer FloorScore®-certified bamboo flooring and SCS Indoor Advantage™ Gold-certified Bamboo Panels and Veneer. As the global leader in independent certification of environmental and sustainability claims, SCS measures more than 78 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from building materials; certified products are guaranteed to prevent indoor air toxins and contribute to healthier and safer home, work and school environments.
Not only is Teragren an environmentally friendly company, its full range of bamboo products— from bamboo flooring to worktops to panels and veneer—are of the highest quality.
Since no official grading system is in effect for bamboo flooring and panels, not all products are alike or of the same quality. Some companies simply import based on the lowest price—giving little regard to the amount of harmful chemicals used in the factory-finish or adhesives used in the manufacturing process. If the bamboo is harvested too soon, the fiber will be soft resulting in products which may be as soft as pine or fir.
However, as a manufacturer, not just an importer, Teragren can guarantee the quality of its products. Teragren's bamboo production is controlled from harvest to final product using ingredients which exceed even the most stringent world standards for off-gassing.
As the industry leader in creative design, application and new product innovation, Teragren offers a wide selection of stylish and sustainable products. The result? Beautiful, renewable, durable bamboo® products that are perfect for every installation type, whether residential or commercial.
