The organic molecule formaldehyde is a naturally volatile organic compound (VOC) that is commonly present in our atmosphere, both indoors and out, usually at levels of 0.03 ppm (parts per million) or less. Formaldehyde-based adhesives are used to make plywood, particleboard, medium-density fiberboard and other building materials. Formaldehyde is also found in many common household products, including permanent press fabric coatings. Small amounts of formaldehyde are released or off-gassed from any product made with it. It is also released into the air by burning wood, kerosene, natural gas, gasoline and cigarettes. Some people are more sensitive to formaldehyde than others. It has been known to cause cancer in laboratory animals, but at much higher exposure levels than people typically experience.
